Made in Uwajima, this ittobori style wood carving depicts two bulls going head to head in a fenced area.
Briefly, Ittobori is a carving technique. The name literally means "one chisel cut". You see the angles made by the chisel, they are not smoothed out. An art form that goes back hundreds of years.
Uwajima is one of the places in Japan where bull fighting is famous. It's not like the bull fighting the rest of the world is familiar with. It is more like a sumo contest. The bulls fight each other accompanied by their handler or farmer who sees that they do not really hurt each other. The winner is determined when one turns and runs. The bulls are often "pets" and they have names.
These bulls measure 4" x 2" tall. The stand is 8-3/8" x 3-3/8" x 3/4". Japanese characters burnt on stand. May include signature. In good condition with a few minor scrapes.
